02/16/14 -- Sixth Sunday after Epiphany -- "The Law - For Our Sake"
Scripture: Deuteronomy 30:15-20; 1 Corinthians 3:1-9; Matthew 5:21-37
My friend, Natalie, is a Lutheran pastor in Pennsylvania. She calls the passage from Matthew today an "amputation passage". The Hymn of the Day at her church? "Precious Lord, Take My Hand".
I didn't go that direction this morning, but Natalie's approach seems intriguing as well. Read above or listen below. Peace to you!

As part of our monthly Feast, Faith and Film series, this Sunday we watched an interview by Krista Tippett with ELCA Pastor Nadia Bolz-Weber, who is a lot of fun and very grounded in Scripture and tradition. You can watch the interview here.
Peace to all!

01/26/2014 -- Third Sunday after Epiphany --
"To Whom Do We Belong?"
Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:10-18; Matthew 4:12-23
Last week, I had the good fortune of going to Boston with my very good friend, Andy, who is pastor at 2nd Congregational Church in Warren. We went to a conference at Andover-Newton Seminary. It was on Social Media and "Nones".
My sermon was heavily influenced more by my experience in Boston, a city I love, than the conference. Even so, it was good to be with friends and to spend time learning about the changing world. The picture to the left figures prominently in the sermon, and it speaks to some of the misunderstandings and misinterpretations of the rise of social media, electronic connection and computers.

Scripture: Isaiah 49:1-7; 1 Corinthians 1:1-9; John 1:29-42
Once again, it snowed on Saturday evening and Sunday morning so many of you could not get to church. We missed you! I hope you are able to find your way to the website to hear the sermon. Peace and blessings to all of you!

01/12/2014 -- First Sunday after Epiphany -- "Intentionally Following Christ"
Scripture: Isaiah 42:1-9; Acts 10:34-43; Matthew 3:13-17
This is the first Sunday after Epiphany, which was celebrated on Monday, January 6th. Epiphany is locked in our minds as a singular event - the arrival of the Wise Men to see the baby Jesus. But really, Epiphany is an exploration of the revelation on God's part and the awakening on our part of Jesus Christ as the Son of God. In the Eastern tradition (Orthodox and Syriac churches), this is heralded by Jesus' baptism, rather than the visit of the Wise Men. Today, we explore Jesus' baptism.
