06/01/2014 -- 7th Sunday of Easter -- The Sense of Proprioception: Where am I?
Scripture: 1 Peter 4:12-14, 5:6-11; Acts 1:6-14; John 17:1-11
The sense of proprioception is the sense that tells you that you have a body. It is the sense that lets you know where in space your arm is relative to, say, your nose. This sense is one of the strangest, but is very real. Proprioception is how we know we have a body and where we are with our bodies.
This is the last sermon in our series on the senses. Next week is Pentecost, where we learn what it means to be illuminated by the Holy Spirit.
Only audio this week.
Peace to all!

Scripture: Genesis 3:1-21; Romans 5:12-19; Matthew 4:1-11
I was at a retreat this Sunday. I went to St. Benedict's Abbey (www.abbey.org) in Harvard, MA. The monks there are exceptionally friendly and welcoming. Most of the services are in Latin and are chanted in the traditional Gregorian style. It was a very refreshing time. One of our deacons led the service and read the sermon I wrote for the 1st Sunday of Lent.

03/05/13 -- Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday is the traditional beginning of Lent (an Anglo-Saxon word for "Spring"). Lent has been celebrated in one form or another since the earliest days of the Christian church. Ash Wednesday represents 40 days, not including Sundays, of repentance, prayer, reflection and focus in order to prepare ourselves for the Resurrection of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. We prepare for Lent by receiving the ashes - a reminder that "We are dust and to dust we shall return" - and by sharing in the bread and wine, the body and blood, of Christ - a reminder of who has claimed us.
