5th Sunday of Lent - 03/13/2016
"Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" -- Rev. Seth D. Jones Scripture: Isaiah 43:16-21; Philippians 3:4b-14; John 12:1-8 Philippi was the retirement community for veterans of the Roman Army. They knew a thing or two about training, so when Paul uses sports metaphors, he knows his audience. I am not sure if I know mine, but hopefully the examples are helpful. How does downhill skiing and tennis link up with Mary anointing Jesus' feet? Read the sermon or listen below! Peace and grace to all! Pastor Seth P.S. The song this week is from Kate Bush and it seemed appropriate for the theme. |

4th Sunday of Lent -- 03/06/2016
"The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys" - Rev. Seth D. Jones Scripture: Joshua 5:9-12; 2 Corinthians 5:16-21; Luke 15:1-3a, 11-32 The Prodigal Son is one of the most famous of Jesus' parables. I hope all of us can find some way to identify with that son, because I believe to "come to one's self", as it is said of the Prodigal Son, is one of the transformative events of our lives. If you have trouble identifying with him, Traffic might help you out. It is there, in the midst of pig slop, mud, and personal desolation, that the Father rushes out to welcome us back to our true home. PDF above, Audio below |
3rd Sunday of Lent -- 02/28/2016
"Crystal Blue Persuasion" - Rev. Seth D. Jones
Scripture: Isaiah 55:1-9; Luke 13:1-9
I believe music to be one of the most transformative vehicles in our world. Truths and ideas that are unable to be communicated clearly with words and pictures can transfer quickly and deeply when they are transported over a melody line, chords, and rhythm. This week, we hear about the story behind one of the great songs of 1969, "Crystal Blue Persuasion", by Tommy James and the Shondells. Peace to all! Pastor Seth
No PDF this week; only audio.
The AUDIO is very loud during the song, which is about 30 seconds in, so turn down your volume when it comes on.

2nd Sunday of Lent -- 02/21/2016
"Stuck in the Middle with You" - Rev. Seth D. Jones
Scripture: Genesis 15:1-12, 17-18; Philippians 3:17-4:1; Luke 13:31-35
This week, we have a bizarre story about Abram and God's covenant with him. And Jesus confronts the Pharisees in Jerusalem after they warn him that Herod, the ruler of this part of the Roman Empire, is going to kill him. What do we rely upon when we begin to see that what we thought was right and wrong, good and evil, divine and human, aren't what we thought they were?

"How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" - Rev. Seth D. Jones
Scripture: Deuteronomy 26:1-11; Romans 10:4-13; Luke 4:1-13
Lent is, among other things, a time of inner transformation. We subject ourselves to the teachings of Jesus through Scripture, to the movements of the liturgical year, to the whisperings of the Holy Spirit in our lives, and try to become more aware, more conscious, of where and how Christ is present with us. Doing so requires that we get underneath the things that 'light us up' or 'set us off' and then dismantling the wiring and the codes and the commands.

TRANSFIGURATION SUNDAY - 02/07/2016
"I'm Beginning to See the Light" - Rev. Seth D. Jones
Scripture: Exodus 34:29-35; 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2; Luke 9:28-43
What is a Transfiguration? We learn what it has to do with you and me today.
Transfiguration Sunday is a big deal in the Orthodox tradition, where it ranks equally with Easter Sunday. The reason is because what we see in Jesus is what we also are becoming. It is a mystical experience and a core element of the Christian faith and tradition. Transfiguration Sunday also begins the season of Lent, sort of. I treated it that way, at least.
Peace! Pastor Seth
