November 22, 2020 - Reign of Christ Sunday - A Puritan Thanksgiving
"Enter the Gates of the Glory of the Lord" - Rev Seth Jones
Scripture: Ezekiel 34:11-16, 20-24; Ephesians 1:15-23; Matthew 25:31-46
We celebrated the 400th Anniversary of the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth in Massachusetts today by doing a traditional Puritan service, revised to accommodate the extreme situation we are currently dealing with during the pandemic. During the service, I describe the history of aspects of Puritan worship. Hopefully, it describes the value of some of our Congregationalist traditions. Pilgrims were called "Separatists" because they didn't believe the Anglican church could be purified (which the "Puritans" did believe), and instead sought to worship as they saw fit according to their conscience. This leads to how I understand Pilgrims: Not all Puritans were Pilgrims, but all Pilgrims were Puritans.
Regardless, we had a wonderful service on ZOOM today. I hope you enjoy it!

November 15, 2020 - Twenty Fourth Sunday after Pentecost
"Risky Investments" - Rev. Seth D. Jones
Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11; Matthew 25:14-30
Hope is a risky investment. In our parable today, we see three estate managers given the opportunity to cultivate the assets of the Master's estate. 2 make risky investments that pay off well. 1 does nothing. Why? Today, we explore the nature of Hope.
Next week is the transition between Pentecost and Advent for 2020. Let us look forward to the expectations of our faith and do the work required to welcome the Lord this coming season.

"Caught Up In The Clouds Together" - Rev. Seth D. Jones
Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Matthew 25:1-13
This morning, we moved back to all our worship being online, so I changed up the position of the camera and where I stand. It seems to have improved the sound considerably.
We discussed what Paul means about being "caught up in the clouds together". I think it has something to do with Jesus' Resurrection and what it means for our reunion with those who have gone before us. I tied it into the teaching from the parable of the 10 Bridesmaids.
The whole service is below. Enjoy! Pastor Seth

November 1, 2020 - All Saints Day
"Return to the Center" - Ed Gabrielsen, Assistant Pastor
Scripture: Revelation 9:7-13; 1 John 3:1-3; Matthew 5:1-12
All Saints Day is the 1288 year old festival in the church when we remember all those who have died for the faith, all those who have gone before us and led us in the faith, and all those whom we remember faithfully. Ed preaches a sermon that calls us to come back to the center of the faith, Jesus.

"The Spirits of the Law" - Rev. Seth D. Jones
Scripture: Leviticus 19:1-2, 15-18; Matthew 22:32-46
Today, we looked at the Law and the Spirit of the Law. Jesus is arguing doctrine and law in the Temple - or rather, Jesus is doing a kind of spiritual jiu-jitsu in his arguments with the religious scholars of the day. It is a style of argumentation that is designed to short-circuit and re-orient normalized thinking. I think we would all gain by the outcome of the thought exercise he is practicing.

"The Two Sided Coin of Continual Conflict" - Rev. Seth D. Jones
Scripture: Isaiah 45:1-7; Matthew 22:15-22
"Give unto Caesar" has been a watchword pretty much ever since Jesus said it. Now, because of millennia of interpretation, we may never know what Jesus actually meant. My hunch is that Jesus is making things very, very complex in the saying, not easier. We like easy answers to faith questions, but there really are very few easy answers to anything. This is a case where there is no easy answer.

"The Table God Sets Before Us" - Rev. Seth D. Jones
Scripture: Psalm 23; Philippians 4:1-9; Matthew 22:1-14
A king throws a banquet for his son, who is about to get married, but no one shows up. The importance of fellowship at the table cannot be understated in the Bible. Jesus is telling this parable to the religious leaders of the day and is deliberately provoking them. He is telling them they are the ones who don't show up at the table. How do we show up at the table?

"The Death of Caring for Others" - Rev Seth D Jones
Scripture: Philippians 3:4b-16; Matthew 21:33-46
Jesus presents us with a violent and difficult parable again today. There are resonances with the Garden of Eden in this parable, and there are also implications for how things go wrong in the Garden.
We try to understand the Death Spiral of Violence, and how Jesus reverses that.

Scripture: Philippians 1:21-30; Matthew 20:1-16

"Getting to the Other Side" - Rev. Seth D. Jones
Scripture: Exodus 14:19-31; Matthew 18:21-35
This morning we come up to the edge of the Red Sea with the fleeing Israelites. In front of them is an impassable sea; behind them are the armies of Pharaoh. This is the point many of us find ourselves in this time of pandemic - up against an edge with no legitimate route to escape. What God does at this point forms not only individuals but whole nations.
Let's see what happens.

"What Has Been Loosed Upon the World?" - Rev Seth D Jones
Scripture: Exodus 12:1-14; Matthew 18:15-20
This morning we read of one of the more disturbing stories in all of Scripture - the 10th plague that was sent upon Egypt. But the 10th plague is also the Passover event, which is the forming story of the Hebrew people. It is the foundation of the Jewish faith, in the sense that every year begins with the Passover meal, and those who go with Moses are eventually led to the Promised Land - Israel - where the children of the released and free people of God cross the Jordan. It is a powerful story, with some truly powerful elements that apply even today, some 3500 years later.

"The Far Side of Everything" - Rev. Seth D Jones
Scripture: Exodus 3:1-6; Matthew 16:21-28
Jesus is turning back around and heading to Jerusalem. After traveling the edges of the influence of the Hebrew faith, he is bringing what he found at those edges back to the center. But Peter doesn't like it. He doesn't want the ideas, the people, the behaviors from the edges flooding back into the normal. Except that throughout Scripture the edge is always influencing, affecting, and flooding into the normal and status quo.
That is because God is always found at the edges.
We only have the audio of the full service today, rather than video. The sermons starts at 23:30.

"Who Do You Say That I Am?" - Ed Gabrielsen, Assistant Pastor
Scripture: Isaiah 51:1-6; Matthew 16:13-20
The question Jesus asks Peter may be the most important question in all of Scripture. As Ed points out, though, Peter also finds out who he is when he tells Jesus who Jesus is.

"The Food of Dogs and Outcasts" - Rev. Seth D Jones
Scripture: Isaiah 56:1-8; Matthew 15:10-28
This morning is one of the toughest verses in the Gospels. Jesus disses a Canaanite woman in the worst possible way, but then heals the woman's daughter anyway. There is a lot going on here, but finally the fact of the matter is whether or not you and I are willing to argue with God and Christ for the sake of the gifts of God and Christ for us.
The video of the sermon is below.

"On Faith, Dreamers, and Revolutionaries" - Ed Gabrielsen, Assistant Pastor
Scripture: Romans 10:5-15; Matthew 14:22-33
Our Assistant Pastor, Ed, preached on stepping out of the boat and the faith it takes to walk on the water with Jesus. We think it means being like Jesus, but really it is about becoming more of who Jesus hopes we will be.
The video is only of Ed's sermon, since there were sound issues this morning.

"The Abundance of Healing; The Healing of Abundance"
Scripture: Isaiah 55:1-5; Matthew 14:13-21
In the middle of the pandemic, and in the midst of global chaos, our readings for today call for celebrating the good things that the Lord provides for us. How do we reconcile those radically different worldviews?

"The Work of Angels" - Rev. Seth D Jones
Scripture: Genesis 28:10-19; Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43
Today is another Parable of the Sower. This time, there is a single wheat field that has been also sown with weeds by a nefarious actor. It is paired with the story of Jacob's dream of the ladder of angels in Genesis. The connecting element of both stories is angels. What are angels up to in this world? What are we up to in this world? Especially now, when everyone is right and the polarization is pretty much intolerable.
Enjoy the video. I have also posted the PDF of the sermon above. Sermon begins around 30 minutes into the video.

"Paths, Birds, Rocks, Thorns, and Soil" - Rev. Seth D. Jones
Scripture: Matthew 13:1-9, 23-35
The Parable of the Sower seems to be based around "Who" questions. It is often interpreted that way - Are you a pathway and bird person? A rocks and wind and sun person? A thorn bush person? Or a good soil person? The age we live in often determines how we interpret things, and this parable makes more sense, in the times we are living through now, if we ask "Where am I?" rather than "Who am I?" So today we interpret this parable through that question.
The video and audio was pretty messy today, so I ran the audio through a bunch of filters. So just audio today. There is still an echo, which I think is an artifact of ZOOM rather than anything we did. I have posted the PDF of the service and the sermon above as well.

"Our Hearts Are Restless" - Ed Gabrielsen, Associate Pastor
Scripture: Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30
We live in restless, troubled times. Jesus calls us to come to him and know comfort and ease. It is a revolutionary message that uses the language of empire to undermine the empire thinking we are all subject to.
Enjoy Ed's sermon today. I have the video of the whole service below. The sermon begins at about the 25 minute mark.

"Trauma and Resilience" - Rev. Seth Jones
Scripture: Genesis 22:1-14; Matthew 10:40-42
The near-sacrifice of Isaac is one of the most troubling and challenging stories in all of Scripture. We often focus on Abraham and God, but in today's sermon, I focus on Isaac, whose name means "He Who Laughs".
The sound is much better this week. We are getting it figured out.

"Oh, Yes, You Did!"
Scripture: Genesis 18:1-15; Matthew 10:1-18
Sarah laughs at the angels. Then she denies it. She has good reasons.
We all do this in one way or another, and it finally comes down to an issue of integrity - that what we say is what we will do. God always does what God says God will do, and being a Christ-follower means we must begin to model God's ways in the world.

"God Created This? ...To Be Very Good?"
Scripture -- Genesis 1:1-5, 28-31; Matthew 28:16-20
This was our first Sunday back for in-person worship since March 8th. It was wonderful to see so many people in one place. In fact, it was very good. God's pronouncement of God's creation being very good can seem a long distance from whatever our present experience is, especially now.
Today was communion Sunday, so I have included the whole video of the service below.

"The Healing Presence of the Holy Spirit"
Scripture: Acts 2:1-21, 1 Corinthians 12:3b-14; John 7:37-39
Pentecost is upon us. On a day when we seek the fires of love of God, Minneapolis is on fire. On a day when we seek the sounds of the presence of Christ, we hear the shouts of protest and anger. On a day when people hear the language of God in their own tongue, tongues speak for justice and call out the pain and suffering of centuries of oppression.
How do we welcome the Holy Spirit in the midst of the chaos?
